British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
